Fat & Sassy!

SASSY serves up an aerobic workout of comedy and music from hot yoga to hot chocolate. Written, composed and directed by BroadArts Theatre’s Artistic Director, Melinda E. Pittman, the musical features an ensemble cast of women of substance and sings and zings its way through an all-you-can-eat buffet of diets, drugs, mad sacred cows and media brainwashing that surround people of size.

A score of songs and comedy cascade from the cornucopia of FAT & SASSY, including Breasts, Butts, Lipo-suck my Open Thighs, The Drive-By Diet, Let’s Slop Down Some Pop and Comfort Food. “This is a musical whose time has arrived,” said Pittman. “We lay bare the myth that it is simply a person’s own fault she’s fat. We show you our fat genes if you show us yours!”

“Part of our process of creating this musical is researching the myths and facts surrounding weight and weight issues,” Pittman said. “BroadArts discovered and uncovered startling statistics. For example, sources calculate that weight loss is a $40 billion dollar-a-year industry in the US. Yet 98% of diets fail. What else can get away with that failure rate and still be legitimate? “ Pittman concluded, “I guess the best diet is the Oprah diet: Step One, get rich, Step Two: get famous. Step Three: hire a bunch of assistants to work for you. Step Four: heck, who needs to worry about weight when you’re rich, famous and somebody else does the cooking?”

Bring FAT & SASSY to your local theatre, arts council, college, women's studies program or organization! FAT & SASSY~ the musical that does for Fat what the Monologues did for Vaginas.
