Researchers

Be a Co-creator of BroadArts' next comedy musical production! During the first phase of creating WONDERBROADER, (March- May 2008), BroadArts invites enthusiastic, creative, imaginative and curious volunteer researchers to poll our communities and uncover the stories of global s/heroes changing the world right now.

WONDERBROADER will sing the stories of women such as:

  • Aung Sang Suu Kyi, Myanmar's (Burma's) democratically-elected opposition leader and advocate of nonviolent resistance.
  • Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan Maguire, who advanced and anchored the Peace movement in Northern Ireland. Williams and Maguire founded the Community of Peace People and won the Nobel Peace Prize for their work against violence.
  • Wangari Maathai, the first black African woman to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, who is leading a global effort of reforestation and environmental sustainability by working with rural women in Kenya to plant trees and hold back encroaching deserts. Maathai started the Green Belt Movement.
  • And who else? Who are your women heroes changing the world right now? Please let BroadArts know!

Researchers will work with BroadArts staff and Board members to reach out to local experts, immigrants and activists who may know these women or the conditions in which they live, and create informal "story-telling nights", the famous BroadArts Salons, to which the public is invited.

Grant Writing Interns

BroadArts Theatre beckons to an enthusiastic, detail-oriented person with strong writing abilities to assist in fundraising, grant writing and donor appeals. The Grant Intern assists the Development Director with many tasks related to foundation-based and individual donor fundraising. BroadArts Theatre offers an excellent, educational and fun opportunity to gain experience in a very marketable skill. Duties include research, donor data-base updating, writing, editing, and submitting proposals and individual donor appeals. The Grant Intern will become familiar with the workings of non-profit funding, learn the basics of grant writing, developing project budgets, foundation correspondence, reporting and joke writing. This position lasts from March to June, 2008. Grant Interns are volunteers, college course credit is often available.

BroadArts hosted two Grant Interns during our City of Portland-sponsored interactive cabaret in 2006, and worked with five interns during our "Progressive Community Grant Writing Course", conducted last fall.

Marketing Intern

BroadArts Theatre is combing our community for an enthusiastic, detail-oriented and organized person interested in publicity, outreach, public speaking to local organizations, and program ad sales and sponsorships. The Marketing Intern will learn many aspects of marketing and public relations and participate in the BroadArts Theatre WONDERBROADER marketing campaign from start to finish. Duties include basic office tasks, data processing, updating media lists, emailing and following up on press releases with media, reporters and feature writers. Our Marketing Intern will also have the opportunity to write and submit press releases and articles as well as schmooze at promotional events. This is a great position for a college or trade school student of Marketing and Communication: the internship could include class credit. The Marketing Internship goes from April to July, 2008 and is a volunteer position; commission-based fees will be paid for program ad sales.
