One Woman Can Change the World, One Joke at a Time

Award-Winning Author to perform in Chandler, Arizona on October 13th.

Melinda E. Pittman, Artistic Director of BroadArts Theatre, a national touring live theatre company, has professed for years that indeed, we can change the world, one joke at a time. The mission of BroadArts Theatre is to create artistic events that celebrate the impact women and minorities make as we all work together to create a more equal, peaceful, compassionate and just society.

Pittman will be featured in the one-woman show: "One Woman Can Change the World, One Joke at a Time," on October 13th, 2007, hosted by the Valley Unitarian Universalist (VUU) Church in Chandler. VUU is at 6400 W Del Rio, Chandler, AZ 85226. Beverages and exquisite snacks will be offered starting at 6:30pm with the performance starting at 7:30pm. Beverages and snacks are $5: the show is free. Donations are encouraged to support the touring program of the troupe- BroadArts is a 501(C)3) not-for-profit organization. Reservations are encouraged! Groups are exhilarating! Contact Barbara Eichberger, 480-518-0548, or email BroadArts_AZ@cox.net.

This is not simply stand-up comedy; don't get the wrong impression by the title "one joke at a time..." What BroadArts strives to do is illuminate key issues in current and past events using the media of humor, song, theatre stage play, storytelling and more.

Notable figures such as Babe Didrikson (Zaharias), Dolores Huerta and "Mother Jones" come to life in BroadArts Theatre's presentation "WonderBroads." Often people arrive at BroadArts presentations not knowing the names or life work of these real American heroines. After attending BroadArts Theatre shows, they leave excited and educated about the many fore-mothers featured in the show. Melinda E. Pittman was awarded the Angus L. Bowmer Drama Award for the Oregon Book Awards in 2000 for "WonderBroads."

Other controversial and current topics have been treated to BroadArts' educational and amusing interpretation, including "Fat & Sassy", "AmBushed" and "Homeland In~Security." Each of these comedy musical productions has dealt with difficult issues facing diverse populations, by telling the real stories of women and minorities who seek to create peace and justice. For example, women's issues such as size and weight, leadership and having voices heard are illuminated in the BroadArts original work: "Fat and Sassy."

The appeal of BroadArts Theatre is extensive, as Melinda and the Board of BroadArts seek wide and diverse input on all BroadArts' original work. BroadArts recently partnered with the City of Portland for a series of inclusive and fun interactive neighborhood performances to build momentum for, and collect information about building community, developing stronger neighborhoods and including more voices in determining the future directions of the City of Portland, Oregon. BroadArts was supported in its 2006-2007 season in part by the City of Portland VisionPDX Project. BroadArts' work with VisionPDX is adaptable for many localities, principalities, businesses and organizations.

BroadArts is also supported in part by the Kinsman Foundation, the McKenzie River Gathering Foundation, the Polk Family Trust, The Foundation of Mercy, and generous donations of individuals.

The show on October 13th will include performance and a presentation on BroadArts that will allow for questions and answers about how BroadArts uses humor, projection, redefinition and song to teach, comfort, transform, and celebrate us all.
